The Studio

Jeff’s studio is on his organic farm in the countryside just outside of Saugatuck, MI. There he devotes one of his outbuildings into a full ceramics studio with 2 electric kilns and one gas-fired Raku kiln. In the studio he uses Speedball pottery wheels (formerly Creative Industries). In the studio he has the Clay Boss wheel which was his first ever. He has thrown tens of thousands of pounds on it with ease. The Elite wheel by Speedball centers 175 pounds which meets the demands for all his large scale needs. Along with those two standard sized wheels, he loves to use his Artista wheel. The small wheel is amazing for traveling and demonstrating at his gallery because of its size and ease transporting. It centers 25 pounds which is a huge amount for the size of the wheel. This wheel he uses for regular production of specific works when space is limited. Other than the pottery wheels, Jeff uses very few tools. Sponges, ribs, and only a couple trimming tools make up his entire studio.

The most important part of a potter’s studio is SPACE. An old barn-styled building is a perfect studio with shelving, tables, and a few excellent wheels.
